Big name high-street furniture retailers including Argos and Homebase have been ordered to pay £20 million to those injured by the recent spate of toxic chemical burns caused by imported furniture manufacturered in China. What you may not realise is that this is not the first time something like this has happened. In July 2008, thousands of people were injured by toxic gas caused by more imported furniture (src times) and there are no doubt many more incidents of such lapses in the manufacturing process over the years.

This is yet another reason to buy products that are wholly created in the UK.

Many sofas and chairs on sale today are created by the lowest bidder. This often means they are produced in China, India or South America where safety is not a primary concern. Even retailers of the classic Chesterfield could fall into this category with many suppliers sourcing the semi-completed pieces from outside of the UK and only hand-finishing the pieces in the UK in order to give them a ‘Made in the UK’ stamp of authenticity.

Rest assured that every component of items pirchased from the Chesterfield Workshop are produced inside of the UK and that each item is hand fabricated from the ground up in our UK workshop to full UK fire safety and Health and Safety standards.

So remember that to safeguard yourself and your family, ask your retailer if your next sofa has been wholly created in the UK just like those produced in the Chesterfield Workshop.

To further put your mind at ease heres a quick photograph taken of our standard fire safety sticker which is placed on each piece produced.

As a regular feature i’d like to document just some of the pieces actively in production at the Chesterfield Workshop. This will hopefully help us showcase some of the weird and wonderful pieces requested by our customers and help give buyers of our stock ranges a chance to see chesterfield sofas and chairs in various colours.

Please note that these are production photographs taken in the workshop so expect to see bits of foam, partial constructs and other junk in the background as well as the infrequent photographs of some of our team.

Below you will find a comprehensive guide to the types of leathers available.

Full Aniline / Sauvage

A full Aniline leather is the most natural, prized for its softness of feel, these leathers have been Aniline dyed in a vat where no colour coating is added. The most expensive type of leather to produce, Aniline leathers use the highest quality hides. Because these leathers are uncoated they may be susceptable to spills as the leather tends to be very porus. Full aniline leathers are the most comfortable to sit on and remain cool during use.

Pull Up Aniline

Pull Up aniline leathers are similar to full aniline leathers with the addition of an extra top treatment of oil and/or wax. The resulting effect of this treatment is the development of an attractive ‘distressed’ look which develops over time and use. When Pull Up leathers are stretched i.e. as in the tufting used on a chesterfield sofa, the streatched or ‘pull up’ areas become lighter creating an interesting tonal effect. Pull up aniline leathers require careful use and are prone to scratching.

Semi-Aniline Leathers

Dyed with the addition of a thin ‘finishing’ layer, semi-aniline leathers combine the softness and feel of a full aniline hide with the benefits of having a protective finish. Benefits of the dying and finishing process include uniformity of colour and softness of feel.

Pigmented

Buffed to remove any naturally occuring scaring, Pigmented leather is coloured using opaique pigments and embossed with an artificial grain pattern to ensure uniformity of colour and to help resist fading.

Nubuck (AKA Chaps, Stonewashed or Suede)

Nubuck leather is a full aniline leather that has been brushed to create a nap giving this leather a velvety feel. Unlike suede which is created from the flesh side of a hide, nubuck is created from the underside. Issues with nubuck arise due to the materials absorbancy.

Bycast Leathers

A recent development, Bycast leathers created by splitting a hide into thinner thicknesses. Used mainly in the fashion industry and recently becoming widely used by furniture manufacturers, Bycast leathers are usually darker in appearance and have a pull-up effect when stretched. Bycast leathers come in a wide assortment of standards and must remain below 30C. Topped with polyurethane, bycast leathers should not be cleaned using normal leather creams.
